I’m thrilled to share that my second novel, CAVE OF SECRETS, will launch August 27th!! Stay tuned for details about virtual and in-person launch parties, and I hope you’ll join me for this exciting release. You can add your name to the launch events list here and stay updated on events, news and opportunities.
I’ll be posting about all the elements of this book, including generous and loving endorsements from fellow authors and the behind-the-scenes how-it-came-to-be of this 4 POV story set in Scotland and Michigan.
CAVE OF SECRETS is … A story about love, hiding and centuries-old secrets setting everyone free…
Four story lines. Two continents. Secrets buried in Scotland for two centuries. Until a tenacious American digs them up.
Sam left his Orthodox Jewish family for a place where he could be openly gay but can’t commit to love for fear of losing his daughter.
Eve quit a promising journalism job for an archival fellowship, where she finds love and a trove of letters that reveal dark secrets about British aristocracy. But her work threatens everything she’s ever wanted.
Margaret escapes poverty and becomes an aristocratic Lady, but nearly loses it all when she focuses more on position than connection.
Mac rejects the stuffy path of his high-society family and falls for a determined American who challenges his notions of truth.
CAVE OF SECRETS is a novel about love and loss, antisemitism and homophobia, hiding in the open, sexual awakening and family legacy. This is a story of accepting who you are, finding a love that allows you to live out your secrets, and choosing the parts of your past that you want to inform your present.
The Journey of a Book
The idea for CAVE OF SECRETS grew out of some historical figures I discovered during my writing sabbatical in the Scottish Highlands in 2022. I went back in 2023 to spend time near Loch Lomond, which is where a good portion of the novel takes place.
So much went into creating this book. From researching popular baby names during the years when the characters would have been born to finding music, food and beer that was popular during the time the book takes place. I researched towns and street names in Ann Arbor, Michigan, another setting for the book, and hiked some of the trails that my characters walk, deep in contemplation.
As with all my books, CAVE OF SECRETS has love, romance, passion, and really good food. A desire for deep connection. A yearning to know who we are and why we’re here. It’s a winding story where four people share their journeys, which intersect in the most unexpected ways. And, there’s a hint of magical realism, too!
I wrote the first draft in a couple of months, but it was messy, as first drafts tend to be. I printed it out and edited by hand, and then set about revising. I went through several rounds of revisions before sending the book to early readers and then took their feedback and went back to work. Finally, I sent the book to my talented editor, who dove right in, and I had some reworking to do after hearing back from her.
I’ll share more about this in the months leading up to launch, but suffice it to say that the writing was fun and challenging and even though I planned the book in great detail, the characters still took over, spoke to me and directed the story where it needed to go. I love when that happens!
While my launch date is August 27th, I’ll have a pre-launch event at the Highland Games in metro Detroit, so come out and see me there. Stay tuned for the cover reveal in early May!
